Should A Locksmith Drill My Lock?

Broken Key Euro cylinder

If a locksmith has told you they need to drill your lock, your first thought is probably: is that really necessary, or am I about to be sold a new lock I don’t need? It’s a fair worry. Drilling is a destructive method and it does mean replacing the lock, so it should never be the first thing a good locksmith reaches for. But there are genuine situations where it’s the right call. Here’s how to tell the difference.

I’m Tim. I’ve been opening locks across Buckinghamshire since 2005, and I drill only when there’s no better option. If you’re stuck right now, call me on 07966 233092.

When Should A Locksmith Drill My Lock?

Drilling a lock is often viewed as the last resort in the locksmith industry. It’s a method that should only be employed when all other non-destructive entry methods have been exhausted. Non-destructive methods include picking the lock or using a bump key. These techniques require a high level of skill and expertise, which is why it’s crucial to hire a professional locksmith like Millennium Locksmiths.

Non-destructive entry methods are preferred because they allow the locksmith to gain access without causing damage to the lock or door. These techniques, such as lock picking or bumping, require a deep understanding of the lock’s mechanism and a steady hand. They are akin to solving a complex puzzle, where the locksmith must manipulate the internal components of the lock in just the right way to unlock it.

The Decision to Drill

The decision to drill a lock is not taken lightly. It’s a step that’s only considered when other methods have proven ineffective or when the lock itself is too complex or damaged for non-destructive methods to work. The locksmith will always inform the customer about the need to drill the lock and explain the reasons behind this decision.

The Process of Drilling a Lock

Drilling a lock means creating a small hole in the lock cylinder so the pins can be manually manipulated. I select a drill bit suited to the size and type of lock, then carefully drill at a specific point on the cylinder. Once the pins are set, the lock turns and opens. The trade-off is that drilling renders the lock unusable, so it will need replacing afterwards. I carry a range of quality replacement locks on the van, so I can fit a new one straight away and you’re not left waiting or insecure.

After the Drill

Once the lock has been drilled and the door is open, the old, damaged lock will need to be replaced. The locksmith will typically have a range of replacement locks available and can install a new lock immediately. This ensures that your property remains secure and that you have immediate access to your newly installed lock and keys.

The Risks of Drilling a Lock

While drilling can be an effective method of gaining entry, it’s not without its risks. There’s a chance of causing damage to the door itself or the locking mechanism. This could potentially lead to additional costs for repairs or replacements. That’s why at Millennium Locksmiths, we only resort to drilling when absolutely necessary and after explaining the potential risks to our customers.

When Not to Drill a Lock

There are certain situations where drilling a lock should be avoided. For example, if the lock is a high-security model, drilling may not be effective and could potentially cause significant damage. Additionally, if the locksmith believes that the lock can be opened using non-destructive methods, then drilling should not be considered.

High-Security Locks and Drilling

High-security locks are designed to resist various forms of forced entry, including drilling. These locks often come with hardened steel pins, anti-drill plates, and other security features that make drilling a challenging, if not impossible, task. Attempting to drill such a lock could result in damage to the drill bit or the lock itself, and it may not even result in a successful entry.

Lock Drilling FAQs

When might a locksmith need to drill my lock?
Only when non-destructive methods have failed, usually a badly damaged lock or a key snapped inside the mechanism. I’ll always try to open it without drilling first, and I’ll tell you honestly if drilling is the only option left.

Will drilling the lock damage my door?
No. Done properly, drilling affects the lock cylinder, not the door, frame or handle. I take care to protect the door’s surface and finish, and once the old lock is out I fit a working replacement so the door looks and works as it should.

Are there alternatives to drilling a lock?
Yes. Many locks can be opened without drilling using the right tools and techniques, and I always try those first to save your original lock and your money. But if the lock has seized, warped, or failed internally, drilling becomes the sensible option.

Will drilling a lock affect my home security?
If anything it improves it. Drilling and replacing a faulty lock removes the old, worn or broken mechanism and gives you a fresh, reliable one. I can also recommend a stronger lock if your current one is outdated.

How can I tell if drilling is necessary before your locksmith arrives?
It’s hard to be sure without seeing it, but a snapped key in the lock, heavy corrosion, or a mechanism that won’t turn at all usually point that way. Don’t force the key, that often makes it worse. Call me and I’ll tell you honestly whether drilling is likely and why.
